Caston Thomas, CEO and founder of InterWorks Technology in Rochester, MI is both a standing tech expert and co host for he show but he is also an excellent commentator on security on the Web. So we took special note of his response to an article by another security expert on the degree of information that Google has about each of us.

Caston is going to help us look at the consequences of all that data mining and deal with the simple but profound question: What has happened to privacy? Is there such a thing anymore? How can we protect critical data e.g. SS numbers, bank account information etc.?  What does privacy mean in 2018? Is Google the only or biggest player in this field? Who else has eyes on our data?

Google Plans Its Own US Cellular Service

Google has confirmed for the first time that it plans to offer connectivity directly to mobile users in the U.S., but a senior executive downplayed the competition it would be to major U.S. cellular carriers.Several reports have said the company is preparing a service that would be offered across an existing cellular network under a Google brand — a so-called “mobile virtual network operator” or MVNO. But the reports hadn’t been confirmed until Sundar Pichai, the company’s senior vice president, spoke at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Monday.”You’ll see us announce it in the coming months,” said Pichai.

Pichai said it won’t be a full-service mobile network in competition with existing carriers.

Instead, he said, it will give Google a platform through which it can experiment with new services for Android smartphones.

Google Chromecast Review

From Wired.com

Google’s Chromecast, a little gadget that plugs into an HDMI port on the back of your TV to let you watch Internet or browser-based video, just launched yesterday. We haven’t had time to fully process it for a review yet, but after spending a day with it, we do have some initial thoughts and answers.

  • The main thing to understand is that this is not an Apple TV or TiVo like thing. It’s fundamentally different. Think of it like this: If there are things on the web that you would like to see on your television, this is an extremely easy, portable, and inexpensive way to do that. It will also run smartphone apps that use the Googlecast API, but for now there are only three Android apps that support that–Netflix, YouTube, and Google Play.

Google Turns the Heat Up on Office

Google launched its Microsoft Office substitute, Quickoffice, for Apple’s iPhone, Android smartphones and Android tablets, fulfilling a promise made in December.

The release follows the launch of Quickoffice for Apple’s iPad late last year, when a Google executive said that iPhone and Android versions “are on the way.” The move was also preceded by a February announcement that Google was baking the Quickoffice technology into both its Chrome browser and Chrome OS.  Full Story on MacWorld

Google Pixel Laptop Takes Aim at Microsoft

Will high priced browser-based laptop harm Microsoft?

Normally Google’s Chromebooks are at the very bottom of the laptop entry fee…until now.  Pixel is the newest addition to the Chromebook like weighing in around the same price point as the basic MacBook Air and Microsoft Surface Pro.  Is this a serious contender or another serious mistake by the company that brought us Google TV and its devices?

Pixel Tech Data

  • CPU: Intel Core i5, 1.8 GHz
  • Display: 12.85-inch, 2560 x 1700, 239 PPI, 400 nit
  • Memory/storage: 4GB memory; 32GB storage (64GB LTE model)
  • Ports: 2-USB 2.0; miniDisplay port; 2-in-1 SD/MMC card reader; audio
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi (a/b/g/n) dual-band; Bluetooth 3.0
  • Battery: 59 Wh, up to 5 hours
  • Dimensions: 297.7 x 224.6 x 16.2 mm (11.72 x 8.84 x 0.63 inches)

The powerful hardware on the Pixel doesn’t come cheaply, with the Wi-Fi model priced at $1,299. A model with LTE will be available in April for $1,449. Google is taking a big risk with this high-priced Chromebook as this is a cool thousand bucks more than the popular Samsung Chromebook.
