Rob Ponto, Sr PR Manager for Comcast spent the hour talking about Xfi Pod and the Mest network that they support.  (Full Disclosure) Cal Carson was given some of he equipment to test out in his house and we used that as a way of understanding what Comcast (Xfinity) is offering and what makes this system to revolutionary.

Review

Using a single router is so 2014. Now, everyone is into mesh WiFi systems like Eero and Google Wifi. Not to be outdone, Comcast has its own mesh system that connects to the Xfinity Internet Gateway. The new xFi Pods are now available as a three-pack for $119.

The xFi Pods are small white blocks that plug directly into your power outlets around the house. Comcast recommends the $119 three-pack for homes with 3-4 bedrooms. A larger 6-pack kit is available for $199. To make use of these new mini-routers, you need to have either the xFi Wireless Gateway or the xFi Advanced Gateway. Hour 1: Cutting the Cord…Suddenly at the Braun Household

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Foster and his wife Ginny were greeted with an unpleasant but all too frequent notice on their Roku Smart TV on the evening of July 3, that the network connection was down.  This was not an infrequent event so Foster went to the Comcast router and unplugged it for the usual 30 seconds which would then be followed by replugging the router into the power and waiting about 5 minutes for all the systems to reboot. That was when Foster discovered that he had unwittingly cut the cord!   When he tried to plug the power cord back into the Comcast router, it wouldn’t hold the power. No more thinking about cutting the cord…It was done!

Ooooops! Watch your mouth around Alexa

A Portland family’s private conversations were recorded by their Amazon Echo smart speaker and emailed to a random phone contact of the father in an incident that has given fresh life to concerns that popular smart speakers are recording more than their owners realize.
The Oregon family contacted Amazon to investigate after a private conversation in their home was recorded by their Amazon Echo — the voice-controlled smart speaker — and the recorded audio was sent to the phone of someone in Seattle who was in the father’s contact list, they told a local TV station.
When it’s turned on, Amazon’s voice recognition program is constantly listening for its “wake word,” the word that tells the system to pay attention. Alexa has four — Alexa, Echo. Amazon or Computer, but the default is Alexa unless the user changes it.
After it hears the wake word, it starts sending the conversation to the cloud, where it’s recorded and translated for Alexa to respond to.
