BigBreakUp

Mary Jo Foley, ZDNet

There is a sneaking suspicion that the recent purchase of Nokia smartphones by Microsoft may in fact lead to the breakup of the digital giant.  Steven Elop, CEO of Nokia, is an old Microsoftie coming back to lead the newly expanded Devices division and there are rumors that he might in fact be in line for the new CEO job.  But can the complex behemoth that is Microsoft be agile enough to survive in today’s tech atmosphere as a single unit or as a number of more agile units?  Stay tuned.

Podcast 1335 Sept. 7, 2013: Child Prodigy and Our Social Media Guru

A child prodigy

Show Notes:

What did you want to be when you were 9 years old.  Our remarkable young guest, Jack Bruienne has set his sights on becoming the CEO of Apple by the time he’s 29! We wouldn’t put it past him.  Jack won a prize recently on the show by being able to name the order of three former Apple operating systems.  No coaching needed; Jack has partitioned his white MacBook to run all three! The Apple (pardon the pun) hasn’t fall far from the tree because Jack’s dad, Pepijn Bruienne helps manage thousands of Macs across the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor.  Mom, Anne Bruienne, is no slouch either; she’s a veteran eBay auctioneer from way back.

Emily Hay, our Social Media Maven, updates us on some important networking opportunities coming up like Techonomy Detroit and help us sort out our tangled web of social media apps.  Should we be on LinkedIn, Google +,  Facebook or Tumblr…decisions, decisions. Emily’s company, HayThereSocialMedia is also collaborating on a program to improve teen driving safety called Show your school spirit on Instagram during Local 4 Friday Football Frenzy

Who Will Take Over Microsoft?

Mary Jo Foley, ZDNet

Microsoft is starting a formal search process for its next CEO, following the news that Steve Ballmer will be retiring from that role within the next 12 months.  So who is likely to be on the short list? No doubt there will be both internal and external candidates. I don’t know who might be considered outside the company, but I can tell the names that have been mentioned as internal possibilities.

Steve Balmer Retiring from Microsoft

In a startling and unexpected announcement, Microsoft revealed that CEO Steve Ballmer would retire sometime in the next 12 months. During the intervening time, the company will begin a search for his successor.
“There is never a perfect time for this type of transition, but now is the right time,” Mr. Ballmer said in a prepared statement. “We have embarked on a new strategy with a new organization and we have an amazing Senior Leadership Team. My original thoughts on timing would have had my retirement happen in the middle of our company’s transformation to a devices and services company. We need a CEO who will be here longer-term for this new direction.”

Windows 8.1 to launch in October

windows 8.1

Ed Bott/ZDNet

Microsoft today confirmed what had been widely rumored for the past week: Windows 8.1 will be released to the general public in October. Specifically, “starting at 12:00am on October 18th in New Zealand (that’s 4:00am October 17th in Redmond), Windows 8.1 will begin rolling out worldwide as a free update for consumers on Windows 8 through the Windows Store.”
Today’s announcement indirectly confirms what my sources have also told me, which is that Windows 8.1 has been officially released to manufacturing.
In Microsoft’s partner-driven world, that’s an important milestone. It means the code is on its way to OEMs, who in turn can incorporate it into new hardware designs for shipment this fall. After a year of generally miserable Windows 8 sales, those OEMs could use some good news to drive holiday sales.

Hotmail and Skype Knocked Out for 24 Hours

Balmer Blah Blah

Mary Jo Foley/ZDNet

Update: 8/15 (received from Microsoft at 6:50 PM EST on August 14): From a spokesperson: “Outlook.com experienced an incident that caused some users not to be able to access their account or share their SkyDrive files. Microsoft has restored web access for all users but some people might still see issues with their mobile devices.  The company is working to restore full mobile access as quickly as possible. For the latest information, we encourage users to visit the status page (https://status.live.com/).” I am still seeing Twitter reports from individuals who are still having problems accessing Outlook Thursday morning EST — and not just on mobile devices. A note on the Live status dashboard is now saying an update on what’s going on with mobile devices wll be coming at 9:00 AM EST on August 15. There’s no further word from Microsoft at this time. The lack of transparency and communication from Microsoft about this set of incidents has been puzzling, I have to say.

Microsoft warns Windows XP users risk 'zero day forever' | ZDNet

“But after April 8, 2014, organizations that continue to run Windows XP won’t have this advantage over attackers any longer. The very first month that Microsoft releases security updates for supported versions of Windows, attackers will reverse engineer those updates, find the vulnerabilities and test Windows XP to see if it shares those vulnerabilities. If it does, attackers will attempt to develop exploit code that can take advantage of those vulnerabilities on Windows XP.”

Because a security update will never become available for XP after April 8, “Windows XP will essentially have a ‘zero day’ vulnerability forever,” Rains said.

How likely is this scenario, realistically? Between July 2012 and July 2013 Windows XP was an affected product in 45 Microsoft security bulletins, of which 30 also affected Windows 7 and Windows 8, Rains said.

Windows XP still had more than 37 percent desktop OS share as of June 2013, according to NetMarketshare.com. Despite that fact, Microsoft officials have said they have no plans to extend yet again the cut-off date for support for XP.

Paul Thurott, WinSuperSite

Microsoft confirmed that it will not fight a July ruling by the England and Wales High Court in which it was found to have infringed on British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) trademarks for the term “Sky.” As a result, Microsoft has agreed to rebrand its SkyDrive cloud storage service with a new, as yet-unknown name.
