Hour 1: Baker College Flint Free Fix-IT Fest and Championship Cyber Defense Teams
Doug Witten, director of cyber defense, computer science and computer information systems programs at Baker College’s Flint campus joins us to talk about the upcoming second Computer Fix-IT event in conjunction with the all-campus open house event that includes the popular Car & Motorcycle Show at the main campus, Sunday, May 21, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
At the Computer Fix-IT event, the public can get help from students in Baker College’s IT programs and IT faculty to resolve a variety of computer issues, from installing software and hardware to ridding machines of viruses. The students’ specialties are all makes and models of laptop and desktop personal computers (PCs) using Microsoft Windows, UNIX or Linux operating systems, but they will also look at other products. There is no charge, but donations are welcome and will be used to provide food and snacks for club members as they practice for upcoming competitions.
Services are offered on the spot while the customer waits and enjoys the other activities of the day or computers can be dropped off and picked up later that day. Appointments are not available. For more information about the all-campus open house, visit www.baker.edu/about/news/baker-college-car-motorcycle-show-shifts-overdrive/.
Late nights and technological talent helped make the first Computer Fix-IT event a success for the student Cyber Defense Club at Baker College’s Flint campus. More than 25 students and faculty members worked the two-day event, providing service to more than 150 community members. Many of the students involved were on the teams that won the 2016 and 2017 Cyber Defense State Championships. Baker College of Flint fielded a second team in 2017 that won third place. Information about the student Cyber Defense Club at Baker College’s Flint campus is at http://bakerflintcyber.com/
Greg Kempf, was a member of the championship Cyber Defense teams from Baker College Flint for both 2016 and 2017 and will be sharing about this state-wide competition.
Dr. Richard Bush, Dean, College of Information Technology, Baker College rounds out the presentation. He will talk about careers in IT and supporting programs at Baker College.
