Podcast 1335 Hour 1 Sept. 7, 2013: Child Prodigy and Our Social Media Guru

Show Notes: Hour 1

What did you want to be when you were 9 years old.  Our remarkable young guest, Jack Bruienne has set his sights on becoming the CEO of Apple by the time he’s 29! We wouldn’t put it past him.  Jack won a prize recently on the show by being able to name the order of three former Apple operating systems.  No coaching needed; Jack has partitioned his white MacBook to run all three! The Apple (pardon the pun) hasn’t fall far from the tree because Jack’s dad, Pepijn Bruienne helps manage thousands of Macs across the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor.  Mom, Anne Bruienne, is no slouch either; she’s a veteran eBay auctioneer from way back.

Emily Hay, our Social Media Maven, updates us on some important networking opportunities coming up like Techonomy Detroit and help us sort out our tangled web of social media apps.  Should we be on LinkedIn, Google +,  Facebook or Tumblr…decisions, decisions. Emily’s company, HayThereSocialMedia is also collaborating on a program to improve teen driving safety called Show your school spirit on Instagram during Local 4 Friday Football Frenzy

Review: Nokia Lumia 920

Lumia 920
Finally

After an interminable wait, the ice suddenly broke when I was invited to the grand opening of the Microsoft store in Troy June 2013. There I met a helpful person who works for a West Coast PR firm contracted to promote Microsoft events.  Through them I got to the right person in less than a week and had a Lumia 920 Windows Phone 8 arrive in another week.

Heavy Enough to Cause Damage
My fire engine red Lumia 920 came out of the box swinging like a heavy weight.  It is one of the heftiest mobile phones you will ever carry but…it feels strangely lighter than its older sister, the Lumia 900.  This is perhaps because of the tapering of the edges on the phone which gives it a markedly more comfortable grip on the device. Unfortunately the bright minds that designed the Lumia 920 felt that the external surface had to be as slippery as possible!  In the first hour of having the device out of the box it squirted out of my hands no less than a half dozen times.  If you are going to make this your next smartphone, invest in a rubber protector that wraps …

Podcast, April 28, 2012: Seeing through Braille Note

Show Notes:

For years radio has been the window on the world for the blind and visually impaired and WJR has been a special friend to many of them.  The first hour of our show this week is dedicated to those listeners.  We hope you will listen in and learn about the amazing things that visually challenged people are doing online thanks to technology.

For Ted Lennox blindness is no more a disability than having grey hair ; it’s just part of his life circumstances. During his career as a high school teacher, Ted taught hundreds of young people how to turn visual challenges into triumphs.  He has also been on of our most frequent visitors on the Internet Advisor during the last 15 years.
In this show Ted introduces us to BrailleNote Apex BT 18 Braille Notetaker, a remarkable device that allows the blind to surf the web as well as any sighted person.  Joining Ted for the program are:

  • Jerry Weichbrodt, GM test track engineer
  • Keithetta Hicks: 16 in 10th grade at Osborn High, Detroit
