In case you or colleagues are following Facebook’s announcement today that users will soon be able to opt out of one of Facebook’s key data gathering practices: the collection and use of people’s web browsing history, which the company uses to sell targeted ads. Facebook is getting the message that privacy and transparency are important to Facebook users and Internet users in general. Giving users the ability to identify and manage which sites are tracking information about them shows that Facebook is actively taking positive steps to protect user privacy. Time will tell, but this may help Facebook overcome the shadow of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
The evolution of the iPad
Amazon announced a new delivery option for Prime members with the unveiling of it’s in-car delivery option. The new service which will launch across 37 cities in the US will allow Prime subscribers with GM or Volvo vehicles to have their orders delivered to their car. Meta Mesh bridges the Digital Divide through the use of novel wireless solutions wherever they are needed. Meta Mesh, a 501c3 non-profit is mostly known for building the PittMesh Community Wireless Network in its hometown of Pittsburgh. This network now boasts over sixty locations providing open public Internet access. Each device is connected to one another either physically or over the Internet, creating a city-wide Intranet that can be used any time but is especially useful when Internet access is disrupted. Meta Mesh uses open-source technology with all configurations listed on their website, MetaMesh.org.

Keepers, Stage II

Technology of all sorts is radically changing our society and lives. The independent film Keepers dramatically portrays the impact of those changes on the lives of the brave men, women and families who ran the lighthouses of the Great Lakes and beyond. Sharma Krauskopf, executive director of the movie, joins us to launch Stage 2 of her tireless effort to get this movie produced in Michigan despite recent politically motivated repeal of movie incentives. Sharma discusses the progress made, actors cotracted and crowdfunding campaign started for Stage II.

Stuart St. Paul, the film’s director, also called in from England to share his perspective on the road to producing Keepers. He talked about the director’s job and the interaction with Sharma as screenwriter. Stuart is currently directing a web-based mini-series in Great Britain call Shades of Bad.

Linda Mitchell, Dir. of Cloud Sales and Devices, Microsoft Heartland Division and MCWT VP of Programs introduced two of the recent scholarship winners, Emily Morningstar and Tonya Thomas. Linda also talked about the wide range of MCWT programs like GET-IT programs in high school and annual Camp Infinity to encourage young women of all ages to embrace and pursue IT careers. Emily Morningstar graduated from high school in Canton, MI and plans to study computer science at Michigan Technological University in Houghton. She won the $20,000 MCWT Foundation GET-IT Scholarship. Emily founded her school’s GET-IT club, served as its president and participated throughout all four years of high school. She was a finalist in MCWT’s Website Design Competition and a Robofest State Qualifier. She also was recognized as the national runner-up in the National Council of Women in Technology Award for Aspirations in Computing. She served as a summer IT co-op for Mercedes Benz Financial Services.
