Comcast is Turning Modems into Hotspots

If you’re a Comcast cable customer, your home’s private Wi-Fi router is being turned into a public hotspot. It’s potentially creepy and annoying. But the upside is Internet everywhere.

It’s been one year since Comcast (CMCSA) started its monster project to blanket residential and commercial areas with continuous Wi-Fi coverage. Imagine waves of wireless Internet emitting from every home, business and public waiting area.

Comcast has been swapping out customers’ old routers with new ones capable of doubling as public hotspots. So far, the company has turned 3 million home devices into public ones. By year’s end it plans to activate that feature on the other 5 million already installed.

Microsoft Pushes 8.1 Update

There are few if any good reasons to cling to the original Windows 8 (or its bigger brother Windows 8.1) that Microsoft introduced released for general availability on October 26, 2012. The kindest thing that could be said was that it was a “rough” launch! With the arrival of June 10, 2014 Microsoft is ending support for Windows 8.1 and urging users to move up to the Windows 8.1 update. Not to do so would be even worse than clinging to an unsupported Windows XP…and the upate is free. Just do it! ;-)) Foster

Today, June 10, is Microsoft Patch Tuesday. It’s also the deadline for consumers running Windows 8.1 to install the Windows 8.1 Update if they want to continue to receive patches and fixes from Microsoft.

Microsoft originally imposed a deadline of May 13 on consumer users to move to the Windows 8.1 Update. On May 12, Microsoft announced a deadline extension to June 10.

Business users still have until August 12 to move to the Update for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2. Microsoft extended the deadline for those …

Microsoft’s third shot in the tablet-that-can-turn-into-a-portable-PC category represents a huge improvement over its earlier attempts. I called the first Surface Pro, released in February 2013,“brilliant, quirky, and flawed,” and argued that it “has enough flaws that many potential buyers will either say no outright or play wait and see.”

Last fall’s Surface Pro 2, released in conjunction with Windows 8.1, was basically just a spec bump that added a Haswell processor (improving battery life) and gave the trademark Surface kickstand a second angle.

Surface Pro 3, on the other hand, is a complete redesign that maintains the original Surface Pro vision (and a few of its quirks), while tackling its biggest flaws head-on.

Like its predecessors, the Surface Pro 3 isn’t for everyone. It’s also hard to categorize. Lining it up next to a conventional laptop or a full-size tablet results in an odd set of comparisons and, inevitably, reviews that focus on the mismatches.

WWDC 2014: The Future of Computing with Apple

Okay let me be frank…. The WWDC is really more of a geek fest and info that is directed to developers. It’s really not for the end consumer even though they talk and show things that the end consumer will benefit from.

With that said, the two things I thought were of consumer interest are:

Mac OS X – 10.10 – Yosemite

Well they have changed from Cats with California names. “Mavericks” was the first and now they have Yosemite. While the names are interesting, the OS features are what we really care about.

Spotlight – More prominent and faster searching. Also does searches not just on the Mac itself but Google searches and suggestions as well. Also as before you can start applications from Spotlight as well.

Continuity – This allows you to work between your iOS and Mac OS X platforms using HandOff. So you can start e mail on your iPhone, and move to your Mac and finish the e mail on your Mac. You can also link to your iPhone to your Mac to use it as a speaker phone.

SMS – You can now relay messages from other than iPhone users …

Most people measure technologies’ advancement by the end product. But, if you want to get a peek into the future of those cool gadgets, you need to take a look at the little advancements that manufacturers make in the components that produce the end product.

That’s what Computex 2014 is all about and Brad Chacos from PC World has put together a list of 10 killer hardware advancements. Here are some of the highlights:

Intel introduces 2 new processors – the high end Devils Canyon / Quad Core i7 processor and its first chip with a 4GHz clock speed and Intel’s next generation Broadwell Mobil chip used for tablets and laptops.
AMD announces its own powerful Kaveri processors that include both the CPU and embedded Radeon video chipset.
Asus introduced a 6 antennae wireless router that offers latest 802.11ac and 802.11n protocols and will support wireless connections speeds of 1.3gbps.
Sandisk rolls out high capacity Solid State Disk at 240, 480, and 960GB.
Not to be outdone in flash technologies, Corsair announces 256 Gb USB flash drives.
