A couple of weeks ago, I contracted the Windows Recovery malware.  Malwarebytes was able to remove it.  All software and data is intact on my hard drive, however, my tesktop is totaly devoid of icons and shortcuts.  Some information I fould was to enable viewing of hidden files, but this did nothing.  Any ideas?

TDH,

First off, let me say I feel your pain. Secondly, I would suggest you visit the following; and do an internet search for similar items: remove windows restore virus/malware

 http://www.expertsupportnow.co…..s-malware/

I am far from being a power computer user. It has been over a year since I deactivated the Windows Restore feature on the 3 computers I try to keep running without problems. I use a free program, utility, whatever you prefer to call it, offered by Paragon, called BU & Recovery.

Sadly, in my opinion, Windows Backup or Restore doesn't really backup a lot of info that would be nice to have when trying to fix a broken or compromised computer.

If you go to the top of the Internet Advisor website you will find a toolbar labeled TOOLKIT. Select it and scan down thru until you find something that mentions “Gizmo” Richards. He is an Australian gentleman, if I remember correctly. He offers free, and paid-for services, to be advised about the best computer programs, if you will, available for free.

Luckily, I have never had to use the features that BU & Recovery offers, except when I have to do a clean install of XP Pro SP3 on one of my laptops, and it works flawlessly each time. In addition I would suggest checking out some of the free versions of apps that IOBIT offers. They are free to download and I use them often

Hoping some of this info is helpful to you. Please be aware that anything I have posted is only my personal opinion and is not meant to be an advertisement or any type of promotion, or denigration of products, companies or any entity.
