Darn touch pads. I was moving a data file to another folder and slipped it into a read only folder. Now I cannot access it. I've tried to change the folder to remove the read only but that is not working. How can I recover this file?

You did not say what OS you are running so I did a little research on my XP OS.
I did not check them all but a lot of the folders (even ones I made and use all the time) are read only, and I move files to and from them all the time.
I am wondering if your file got set to read only. If so you can try to change it so it is not read only. Then try to move it. You might also be able to click on the file and copy it and then paste it to the location you want it.

Sorry for the omission. running XP
I have tried both copy and move and get access denied.
My file is not read only, but the folder that I dropped it into is and I've tried to change it but it does not accept the change. It is one of those alpha-numeric gobledygooks that appeas to be a temporary internet files.

Have you tried going into safe mode? There are things you can do in safe mode you can not do in normal mode.
One other thought have you tried going to the comand prompt which is DOS and tried to move it from there?
One or the other of these options may work for you.

When you say you can't "access it", do you mean you can't OPEN IT? This shouldn't be happenning. Having a folder be "read-only" shouldn't affect your ability to open a file within the folder. BTW, there's nothing really that can be "read-only" about a folder. In XP, a folder's "read-only" status simply applies a "read-only" attribute to each file contained in the folder. "Read only" status notwithstanding, you should still be able to open the file, and save it out under a DIFFERENT filename.
BTW, how do you know the folder is read-only?
What is the EXACT message you get when you try to, say, drag the file to the desktop? What's the file extension of the file?

Opening in Safe mode makes no difference in the response by the computer.
I get an error message that says "access denied" when I try to open, move, or copy the file. The rest of that message is that the disc is either full or write protected or is in use. Non of those are true.
It is a WinDaq file, file extension WDQ.
When I right click the folder and check properties, the read only box has a light grey check mark. I clear that check mark and apply but it does not change it when I go back and look again.
