When I try to open a word document it is saying that the doc is being used by me and asks me if I want to make a copy. I am the only one logged on the computer and it is office 97. The only way I can get around it is if I go to properties in the document and select "read only".

Does this happen even after restarting your computer? If so, and this is just one specific file, I would do a File->Save As, and save a copy. Then try opening up that copy and editing it.

It happens on all my saved word documents. I even tried creating a new one and when I opened it the same message came up.

Hi Jen,
Were these documents created or viewed in a newer version of Word? There is issues with files that are used in Word 2003/2007/2010 that you then try to open in Word 97, specifically related to protection.
I'm thinking that is not the case though, since you had the issue when you created a new document. Can you try going to Tools->Unprotect Document (If that option is available to you.) ?

I'm not trying to denigrate any Microsoft product but, frankly, I have found the free Open Office product much easier and friendly to use than anything Ms charges you bookoo bucks for. It also has a very decent conversion program included. Check it out.
