System restore problem, McAfee protection issues, "failed to run service" issues

My daughter has a dell desktop running Windows XP.  She caught a virus a couple weeks ago.  One of those "rouge" things.  luckily she didn't click to fix the problem.  (it said there was a hard drive failure and you couldn't see any idons on the desktop, files, etc.) it took some doing, but I was finally able to restart in safe mode and ran a system restore.  once I restored, I ran MalwareBytes.  It found a few issues.  I then ran it again until it came up clean two times in a row.  (ran twice after the first time).

everything ran fine for about a week.  Now she is having problems with her virus software…  McAfee.  It says her software protection is turned off.  I go into the home page and turn it on…  and within 2-3 seconds, it turns itself off.  it won't stay on.

I tried to run system restore again.  I've picked 3 different dates and each time it says that it is unable to restore to that date and to pick another date.

I also am having problems with her internet connection – I'm getting a message square saying "Failed to run service".  We just installed (BEFORE all the problems) a Netgear adaptor for her wireless connection.

Hi Cindy,

You did the right thing but it sounds like there may have been something left in the registry that, like the zombies, rises again to annoy. I would suggest

  1. Boot into Safe Mode and run Malware Bytes again, reboot into Safe Mode again
  2. Download Combo Fix from Ed's Toolkit on the homepage and run (it may take a while)
  3. While there, download Microsoft Security Essentials from the Toolkit to a Download folder on your computer
  4. Uninstall any other security programs you find on your daughter's computer.
  5. Empty the temp cache file on all of your browsers and reboot.
  6. Install the Microsoft Security Essentials from the folder in which you saved it and update it immediately.
  7. Reboot and then run a full MSE scan.
  8. Reboot when done and you should be clean.
  9. Reboot once more for good measure.

Some times remnants of the viruses linger in registry files and can cause a ton of headaches. All of us have found that no one anti-malware, anti-virus software wins all the battles.  It is best to  use them in combination and right now the best combination out there seems to be Malware Bytes and Combo Fix.

Let us know how it goes and thanks for being a faithful listerner.

Thank you Foster… I really appreciate it.

My one problem might be that currently, she can't connect to the internet.I'm also getting an error message "failed to run service".  From one I can tell, it appears to involve her wireless connection.  We recently changed to NetGear external (USB).  it worked fine until this past week when things started acting strange again…

any suggestions if I still can't connect after I run the safemode and malware?

Thanks again!

Foster -

I tried to restart her computer in safe mode and then run Malwarebytes.  I was able to start in safemode, but when I ran Malwarebytes, I got an error message that it experienced a problem and must shut down.

I tried twice in safemode.  Then I just let it restart normally and it ran clean.

Thanks

Cindy
