Question for VO people

Running XP Pro SP3. I do an occasional VO offsite using a couple of older Gatewaway laptops, which are never connected to the internet except to recieve the MS/Windows updates on Update Tuesday. However I keep crapware, malware and other bad stuff detection on these two computers, and run these after every Update Tuesday. I haven't had problems with either computer for years except that MS wants to install all sorts of junk I don't need, like Dot Net, and silly stuff I have no use for.

In essence the laptops are being used as simple DAWs using an external hard drive dock.

To make a long question short, since the two computers are only connected to the internet for a few hours each month, can I, perhaps, just forget about doing any more updates  at all?  I never connect to the internet or use crap/mal/or other programs except to check the downloads from Ms.

If I could get rid of the c/m/b (crapware, maleware, and bloat) programs and Ms updates from these computers they would be much more reliable.

I'd be interested to hear from anybody, rather you agree or disagree.

As always. Thanks in advance for taking the time to respond.

Here's my take:  If a computer NEVER has access to outside data, then it NEVER needs security updates.  And, if you don't care about the occasional bug fix or feature enhancement, then it NEVER needs updates, period.

That said, I'd still be very careful what gets access to that PC (thumbdrives, external USB hard drives, etc).  If you're confident that you can vouch for any removable media that interfaces with that machine, then I'd say you don't have to bother with updates.

Here's one more "food for thought" item……if you ever get into a pinch and decide that you NEED to get that machine online for something (to pull down a quick file, do a search, etc….), I'd make my first stop the Windows Update site.  If you haven't had any security fixes in, say, 6 months, and you surf to the wrong site, you're a dead duck.

Best Regards,

Matt

Matt

Thanks for taking the time to post. I finally decided to cut the cord to the internet on my two laptops completely. In addition, I also reverted back to SP2 from SP3. Since the computers are used exclusively for audio recording, and I am the only one who has access to the computers, and hard drives used, I don't forsee any problems.
