Computer specs: 5 year-old Gateway laptop running XP Pro, SP3, with all applicable updates and IE8.
The problem: Recently switched from Comcast cable to AT&T DSL, using the 2Wire box. Now I'm stuck with Yahoo permeating nearly everything I try to do on the internet.
AT&T and Yahoo have what I would call a symbiotic relationship. Is there a way to remove any/all vestiges of Yahoo w/o having to choose another ISP. I've called tech support at AT&T and Yahoo to no avail, searched the internet for solutions, also to no avail.
The big problem I am having is spam. I've gone from no spam to 3-8 spam emails each day. I use spam filtering apps, but I firmly believe the problem lies with Yahoo's laxity of spam control to begin with.
Any ideas, suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried going to the Control Panel->Add Remove Programs and uninstalling the programs you don't want? Once you get the internet up and running, none of those programs are required (Though it is very annoying that they make you install them.)
Also, I highly reccomend not using the email that comes with your internet connection. If you do, when you change connections, your email address changes. I would look at getting a gmail.com email address. Their spam filtering is phenominal, and will work independant of your ISP.

I did as you suggested and went to GMail. That has initially solved the problem but the problem still exists. AT&T and Yahoo are so intertwined that short of going to another ISP Yahoo is still in the background messing with my computer.
I find their relationship, AT&T and Yahoo, to be less than beneficial for most casual computer users. I'll be contacting the US government about breaking their stranglehold.

The problem doesn't seem to be the Yahoo! service but rather the ATT+Yahoo software. I would suggest removing that and stay with Yahoo. I've been with Yahoo (free and SBC Yahoo) since '96-'97.
from DSL report:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/7950
Where exactly is Yahoo showing up? Is it in IE or other software? Often they will skin IE to look like a Yahoo browser with a yahoo toolbar.

I would do two things.
- If you are using a yahoo themed browser, go to firefox.com, and download & install firefox. That may solve a lot of your issues. (And is just a better browser than Internet Explorer)
- Go to Control Panel->Add Remove Programs and uninstall the yahoo software. That should be the greatest help. I do this after every single time I setup a new Yahoo DSL.

The problem is there is nothing in Add/Remove that even remotely relates to Yahoo so I can remove it. I guess as long as I continue to use AT&T DSL as my ISP I'm stuck with Yahoo lurking in the background

You said you switched to gmail, and that helped. What are the exact problems you are still having? How is yahoo lurking in the background?

The problem is I can't remove all the Yahoo crap I'm stuck with since ATT is my service provider.

Hi J.R.
I remove all the Yahoo stuff all the time with clients who have ATT as their service providor. You are forced to install it all during the setup phase of the internet, but there is nothing that makes you keep it once you are setup. There is really no technical reason why it has to be installed in the first place, ATT just makes you install it so they can make a few more bucks.

Expanding on Kurt's remarks, I also removed the Yahoo/SBC/AT&T themed browser. You only need to install & use their software to establish your account with them. Once established, you should be able to uninstall it & just use "regular" Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, or the browser of your choice.
