MSE Problem

I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials for about a year.  Everything was fine until recently when I went to run a cleaner and it said to disable anti-virus, etc., so I did and it apparently did disable one version, but when I went to run the cleaner it said the same thing.  I then removed the program, but had the same result.  So, apparently there is the same MSE program running, but it is hidden and does not show up in the programs field!  Also, when I go to the security center, it does not show any alerts that my system is not protected, so it's there alright, but I can't get to it to either disable or delete.

I emailed MS support and they responded with fixes that I could not follow at all.  I think I would like to 1) delete the program; and 2) re-install.

Any ideas on step one…?!!?  Should I try another free anti-virus program instead of MSE…?

Thanks.

What kind of "cleaner" did you run, and why?

I'm a little confused by what you wrote:

"…..and it said to disable anti-virus, etc., so I did and it apparently did disable one version, but when I went to run the cleaner it said the same thing.  I then removed the program, but had the same result."

So, this "cleaner" told you to disable MSE (or it did it for you)?

You mentioned that you removed a program.  What did you try to remove?  The "cleaner"?  Security Essentials?

You said that when you go into the security center, there are no alerts that your system is unprotected.  Does security center explicitly say that you're being protected by MSE?  You should be able to see this under the 'Virus Protection' area.

You also said:

"….apparently there is the same MSE program running, but it is hidden and does not show up in the programs field!"

Does this mean that when you go to Conrol Panel ->Add/Remove Programs, you don't see MSE listed there?

How about in the c:Program Files folder?  Do you see a 'microsoft security client' folder or a 'microsoft security essentials' folder?

How about the system tray?  Is there a MSE icon down there?

If you can't find the program folder, and you can't find the program listed in add/remove programs, the first thing I'd do is go to http://www.microsoft.com/secur…..essentials and re-download and install the program.  See if doing that gets you anywhere.

There are some registry tweaks we can try to force this install, but until we know a little more about what's going on, I'm not prepared to turn you loose inside your registry ;)

Thanks for the response.

I tried to run Combofix.  It advises to disable antivirus scanners or it could harm the machine.

I disabled the scanner, same message from Combofix.  Then, I uninstalled MSE, yet when I tried to run combofix again, it advised that a scanner was still running.  I went to the security center and it confirmed that a virus scanner and firewall were intact and running.

I went to the security center and clicked on Virus Protection, as you mentioned, and it said "MSE reports that it is up to date and virus scanning is on."

When I go to Control Panel, Add/Remove it does not show MSE being there.

MSE does not show up in the program file folder.

There is no MSE icon in the tray.

After I left this message yesterday, I did exactly as you suggest.  I downloaded and installed MSE.  Then I uninstalled it again using the Add/Remove function from the Control Panel.  That worked, but when I go to the Security Center, it gives the same status as far as MSE still intact.  I did contact MS about this and received emails, learning that sometimes it is trickier to uninstall, on how to locate it and uninstall, but I couldn't follow those directions.  I'm thinking of trying that again and see if I can do the second time around.

Thank you for whatever thoughts you may provide…!

A quick suggestion. You might try downloading CCleaner and using its uninstall feature. I find it to be particularly efficient. You can get the latest fee version from  cnetdownload.com

If you decide to try CCleaner, once it is installed, open the program and select Tools from the left side of the page, select the uninstall box, scan through the list of programs and click on what you want to uninstall and select the the run uninstaller box (upper right side). From there on it's very intuative.

After running CCleaner I would also suggest running the search feature on your os.

Thanks.  I'll give that a try.
