EmbarassedI have WRT54G Router set up from 2006 with help of Linksys tech. My iphone doesn't connect however. It sees my network, pasword, get a note if password is wrong, but doesn't copy any of wireless data (IP address subnet mask etc. ) Phone connect elwhere without problem.

Apple people say that is not their problem, Linksys people say since my laptop works, there is nothing wrong with the router and want $30 for trouble shooting. So before I buy new router (for $28) is it any fix I can do? Something not working just drive me crazy even thou it is not essential. Thanks for help

It sounds like perhaps your iphone does connect to the wi-fi network, but does not get any network settings, such as an IP address.  Is this correct?  If so, DHCP could be turned off on your network, which means an IP address has to be set manually.  Let me know if it does connect, but does not get an IP address.

Are other computing devices able to connect to the wireless network (That have not connected before?).  You may have MAC address filtering setup, which does not allow new devices onto the network with out being setup on the router first.

If that is not the case, I am guessing that something is setup in the router that the iphone doesn't like.  Do you know what kind of encryption you have?  If you have WEP, I've seen some issues with the iphone connecting.  (And if you have WEP, you should change it, because WEP is about as secure as a damp paper towel.)

Let us know.

Hi Jaro,

It appears that you do have DHCP turned on, and MAC Filter disables, so the basic settings are correct.  I know iphones can have problems with WEP, so that could be the issue, but it sounds like it doesn't work with WPA either.  I would try connecting the iphone to the wireless network, and then manually set an ip address on the iphone.  Use the following settings

IP Address: 192.168.1.125

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Gateway:192.168.1.1

DNS1: 64.233.217.2

DNS2: 64.233.217.3

If you are not able to connect with manual settings, then you should try updating the firmware of the router.  This can be tricky though, and can wipe out all your settings, so you will need to set the router up again.

Hi Kurt,

this is like a rocket science!….

I have tried that your sudgestion; so in order to fill up those fields I had to swich from DHCP to Static corect? So I had fields not exactly as yours above.I didn't get Gateway instead I have Router only one DNS and search domain. But now I was not able after fill them all to save it! or say done button! After 10 minutes of frustration and pressing buttons I am back in DHCP and I see IP add.169.254.93.90 and subnet mask 255.255.0.0 and strengh signal on the uper left on the screen! (if those numbers mean anything to you) My guess is that you know how to translate it. Bottom line is that I was not able to connect it to internet.

So I will try your second sudgestion and upgrade the firmware. I was printing some papers from Linksys how to do it. If I drive myself into insanity you will read about me in local paper otherwise I let you know what happened!

Again, thank you so much for help! jaro

HI Jaro,

You would set the Iphone IP addressing to Static.  You are correct on using Router instead of gateway. I am not sure what issue you were having on filling in the items and saving them, you will have to be more specific.

The fact that your iphone has an ip address starting in 169 means that it is not receiving an IP address from the network. Addresses starting in 169 are self addressing, and generally useless.

Hopefully upgrading the firmware will solve your issues.  Good Luck

Hi Kurt,

You will not believe what happened. from admin tab I upgrade for new firmware (last week downloaded). Then I restored settings from file and miracle happened My iphone connect and works!!! Also I do not see any data IP; subnet mask; etc; should I care? My wife's i phone 3G connect as well and her phone read and display all those data. Before the upgrade her phone didn't connect either.

So unless you think I should do something more I will leave it as it is. I was quite nervous about the upgrade I thought I will never be able to make it work again. Anyway big Thank you for help and support!! jaro

I had a similar problem.  As a "not so sophisticated" way to help keep unauthorized users out of my WiFi network, I limited the number of simultaneous router connections.  Once that limit was reached no more devices could get through.  As I added more devices, I had to remember to increase the number of simultaneous router connections.  The updated firmware may have increased the number of simultaneous router connections to a higher default which may have resolved your access issue.  The problem with this approach is that if more authorized users want WiFi access than the number allowed, someone needs to drop their WiFi connection.  If this becomes a more frequent problem I increase the number of connections which leaves the network open to the unauthorized users if all the allowed connections are not being used.
