I need a server. An out of state vendor wants to charge me 10.5k for a server and that seems a bit high.  It only runs a medical office program and has 10 slave computers hooked to it.  Any ideas on what I should be looking for on a price.  The Dell 110, 2x250, 2gb, RD 1000+media, keyboard, mouse and 17 inch monitor was quoted at 4.5k and they wanted to use SCO uni6 6 for another 3.5k.  Backup edge software quoted at $750.  To install and transfer files was an additional 1.5k.  My computer science degree was a long time ago…any help would be appreciated…thanks….toddCool

Hi Todd,

  A large part of the cost of a server is licensing.  Probably 20% of that cost, depending on what microsoft modules you are running.

 

That being said, I have clients running Medical office Practice Management software on much cheaper servers than that.  I would look to see what your software providor reccomends, and go based on that.  If you are running things like Exchange or Sharepoint, it will also be more expensive.

 

I generally prefer to have two less expensive servers than one really expensive servers so you have a backup in case one fails.

 

Can you clarify what you mean by sco uni6 6?  I'm guessing that is a Network storage device?
