Hello, I'm wondering if anyone knows for sure what the operational limit is for my HP G72 laptop is? It came with a 500GB/7200rpm HDD, the nice man in India at the HP 1-800 # said 750 GB/5400 rpm was the limit. I was hoping to buy a 750 or 1TB/7200rpm, but he claimed that may diminish the computer's performance. I'm thinking the intel Core i3-370M 2.4 GHz processor may not be up to the job, or is it? Please let me know what you folks think. I really would like a bigger hard drive if it won't slow my system down. Otherwise, I'll just replace my crashed HDD with the replacement HP sent out- the aforementioned 500 GB/7200rpm HDD.

I wonder if the 750GB/5400rpm HDD would run cooler? This machine (8 months old & in warranty) runs very, very hot.

A bigger hard drive will not slow your computer down. In fact upgrading to a 7200 RPM drive will speed it up.

 

Speed wise, generally laptops use 5400 RPM drives which are slower, but quieter and use less energy (and thus stays cooler).  You can physically put a 7200 RPM drive in the machine. (Which will make it go faster.)

 

The big issue is whether the copy of windows you got from HP will run with a drive not from HP.  Those manufacturer copies of windows are tied to specific hardware profiles.  It should work since all you are changing is the hard drive, but no guarantees.
