In past few days sometimes get a message saying Google has crashed, and a choice of quit or restart Google. Bought computer new in May '05, runs XP, overall speed kind of slow, use dial-up, use computer primarilyfor writing and email. Any general suggestions about the meaning of this message? Things I can check myself? Sometimes get message saying Google is running slow and I should use another version.

Google itself wouldn't crash (as it is a website, and not a program), it is your web browser that would crash.  Could it be Google Chrome (a web browser) that has crashed?   Or some other google product, such as google desktop?  If it is google chrome, it is possible an extension or plug-in is crashing it (through chrome is pretty good about not letting that happen.)   If you are running Chrome, try disabling any extensions you have.

What happens or disappears after you get the message, if anything?

It's been quite a few years since I have used a dial-up.  If I remember correctly, and my old age has not completely addled my memory, the more apps and information demanding programs you try to run when using a dial-up connection the slower things become.  Eventually, the data transfer rate is slowed to the point where something has to give and a crash occurs.

Do you have security apps or something similar running in the background?  Do you connect to the Internet and telephone during non-peak usage hours?

You said you were running XP but didn't mention version or update status.  If you are at less then SP3, I would suggest immediately downloading it, since I understand SP2 isn't going to be supported any longer.  SP3 is a rather long download and I will send it to you a CD of it if you would like.
