Connecting a Laptop to a Router using Ethernet Cable

I had a desktop Windows 7 computer connected to my router and a LAN for my laptops (Win 7 also).

The desktop died so I tried connecting my laptop to the router using an Ethernet cable because I wanted to change the passwords.  It wouldn't connect saying something about a MAC address.

To make matters worse, I had pushed reset on my router to "clear it out" so I can't look up the old MAC address.

What can I do?  Thanks!

Alright.  Some additional questions:

Is your internet service Cable?  DSL? Other?

You have a router.  Moving forward, I'll assume that your router is a separate physical box from your cable/DSL modem.  Let us know if this is incorrect.

You have a windows 7 desktop that was connected via ethernet cable to the router.  Correct?

You have one or more laptops.  How are these connected?  Wired?  Wireless?  Are they connected to the same router as your desktop?  If so, they're all on the same LAN.  I'm assuming that the laptops AREN'T connected via ethernet cable, because you mentioned doing so AFTER your desktop died.  Please clarify this.

What passwords are you trying to change?  The passwords in your router?  In your computer?  Somewhere else?

You got some error regarding a MAC address.  Any chance you remember the exact message?

Where are we now?  What's your current setup and situation?  For example, "My DSL modem is connected to the internet port of my router, an my laptop is plugged into port #3 on the router.  When I click on internet explorer, I don't have internet access, and I get a message that says, 'XYZ MAC address error' ".

Best Regards

Thanks VERY much for the fast reply.

Turned out it was a bad ethernet cable.

You really can set up a router with a laptop even though it has a LAN card and an ethernet port.

The posts on the web (not this forum) are wrong.

Thanks again!
