Would like to try Linux.  I've read a little about it, however my computer skills are limited to using canned or installed Apple and Ms programs and apps to this point.

Any suggestions, thoughts, ideas or information would be appreciated.

I'm am now retired and can spend time learning and am not afraid to make mistakes and learn.

I have used Ubuntu and thought it was easy to use. They have a good forum wher you can find answers to a lot of your questions.

Ubuntu I would agree is a good choice especially since you can – try it out – using a bootable CD. Another one to consider is Linux Mint which is based on Ubuntu so what works on Ubuntu should work on Mint.

I'll admit that I use Fedora 12 which you can also get in the form of a bootable disk.

Most active linux distros (distrubutions) offer the ability to try them via a bootable "Live" disk.

You may also want to check Yahoo!Groups or GoogleGroups to see if there are any LUGs (Linux User Groups) you can join and see if they have get to gethers in your area.

Sorry to say I was not impresses by Ubuntu (10.9), if I remember correctly. After my first try all it offered was try a few apps, plus it totally screwed my clock, date and internet connection up. I'm not giving up. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I keep working with Ubuntu, as time permits, and liking it better. It still seems a bit "geeky" to me at this point. It is not something I'd want to use as my primary OS, but as my daddy used to tell all of his children, "Learning is something that no one can take away from you."

Thanks for the advice about the Ubuntu forum. They have helped me a lot.

After using all versions of Microsoft operating systems, from DOS through Vista, I finally freed myself from Microsoft (and save a lot of money!).  I've made four installations of Ubuntu (Versions 9.04 and 9.10) on IBM NetVista, Dell Dimension 4100, home made P4, and Inspiron 1501.  Ubuntu is a total joy!

I've found free equivalent (or sometimes better) software for Ubuntu (Linux) for nearly any application! (see below)

I recently replaced the hard drive on the Inspiron 1501 with a 500GB drive.  Installed XP then Ubuntu (dual boot).  The XP installation from SP2 disk took nearly 4 hours including updates to SP3, all security updates, NIS anti-virus, all the reboots, and applications (Office, etc.).  The entire Ubuntu 9.10 installation took less than an hour, including all updates, one reboot, and applications!!  The only reason I use XP is for iTunes (I use Songbird on Ubuntu), VIsio (sometimes), Microsoft Streets and Trips (have not found Linux equivalent yet), and editing/sharing Publisher documents with family who use Office.

I'm very amused when I hear all the advertising for "double my speed, clean your computer, etc." and all of the problems of PC people who call the Internet Advisor (GREAT SHOW!).  With Ubuntu I have none of these problems.

Starting to feel like I understand a little about Linux, not much, just enough to scare myself. I'm now going on to trying Fedora 12. Have a feeling I'll be back in kintergarten again. Will keep you posted as progress permits.

I am a fan of CentOS which is a clone of RedHat Enterprise Server edition.  There are many mirrors for this where you can download the .iso DVD image to burn.  It's an OK desktop version, has all the stuff I want plus all the servers to play with, BIND, Apache, DHCP, Squid and many many more.

I use an old PC at home as a Squid proxy.

If you want to play with a server class Linux, this is it.  We use RedHat ES in virtual machines where I work so for me, it's nice to have the same system at home.
