Gary Baker has had a long career working with computers and promoting technology development in Michigan. The show began in 1998 when Foster called Gary who was one of the co-founders of Online Technologies Corporation (now Online Tech) and asked for help with some connection issues in the days of the screaming modems. The response to their conversation and the whole idea of helping people enjoy their computer and online experience grew from there into an alliance that has become Detroit’s longest running locally produced technology talk show. Gary also appeared as the Internet Advisor on Channel 7 Action News, WXYZ-TV in Detroit, every Thursday morning from October 2000 to October 2002.
Gary’s skill have been sought after in business consulting by companies such as Arthur Andersen, AlixPartners where he was a director in IT Transformation Services, later VP of IT Delivery Services at Borders Group in Ann Arbor, and currently in a key role at Cengage Learning Systems. Gary is a sought after lecturer on IT topics and new processes and technologies locally and nationally. We are very fortunate to have him take his busy schedule and share it with us weekly.
Foster Braun has been co-hosting the radio program on WJR since early February, 1998, except for a very short period when Warren Pierce and Gary co-hosted the show. Foster has been with WJR since 1996 and is a 35 year veteran of Detroit radio market where he has worked talk shows for most of his career. Since 1998 he has gained enough knowledge of computers to ruin some really fine machines and then fix most of them with the help of the other Internet Advisors. Two years ago he crossed over to the Dark Side and started worked exclusively on a MacBook Pro laptop although his wife still insists on a Windows PC at home; so he is now equally confused in both worlds! He fancies himself as the voice of the listener some times fighting through the geek-speak to explanations that even he can understand.
Ed Rudel joined as a co-host in 2003 and has been instrumental in helping answer listeners’ questions ever since. Ed has worked for many years as an executive troubleshooter for HP in Detroit where he works with Cal Carson. He is also a reformed “hacker” (white hat….good guys) and every relatives’ favorite troubleshooter, including Foster and he isn’t even related.
Cal Carson joined us in the mid-2000’s to defend the honor of the “Dark Side” and help us with questions about Macintosh (Apple) Computers. Cal is an active member of the Detroit MacGroup and works with Ed Rudel as a corporate troubleshooter for HP in Detroit and is fluent in Windows, Mac and even a little Linux.
Tom Diroff was a regular co-host for approximately three years in the early 2000s, prior to Ed joining the crew, and still helps co-host the program from time to time. Tom is our hardware guru and security resource and a frequent contributor to the Forums. He can also squeeze a nickel so hard the buffalo moos; in fact he once “purchased” a laptop back when they were over $1200 regularly with so many rebates that in the end he made money on the “purchase”!
Erik Anderson (aka Erik the Red, Mac Boy Anderson) is our producer, phone screener and produces a weekly Mac Minute segment that highlights the latest events, inventions and conventions in the Apple computing world. Currently Erik, Cal Carson and Foster are the Mac users on the show although all of the hosts have at one time or other worked with the Mac platform. Leads to lively commercial break discussions at times between Mr. Baker and any takers! ;-b
